Sony’s best selling play station 2 video game console has been given a makeover, with a spanking new slimmed down, lightweight model due to go on sale soon.
The new play station 2 is only about half the size of the existing model and will sell for the same price as the older model.
The new console was launch by sony in an attempt to widen the console’s appeal and prolong its shelf life. Sales figures of the original play station 2 video game were boosted when Sony introduced a smaller version, which was dubbed the PS one.
The play station 2 video game console redesign is part of Sony’s strategy to maintain the PS2’s lead over the rival consoles. Over 25 million of these machines have been sold in the PAL territories, Europe, the Middle East and Africa , since it’s launch in November.
The PS2 video game accounts for just about two thirds of the console in the regions alone, according to
Sony. But console sales start to drop after they have been around for a few years and the PS2 video game console is no exception.
Sony aims to sell over fourteen million PS2 video games in the year, and Sony is even determined to keep the PS2 video game alive by dropping the price which resulted in sales, and it is now hoping that the thinner, sleeker design will temp the more people to buy a console.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President, said that Sony was hoping that the price cut and redesign would increase the PS2 video game console worldwide by some 15%. He said Sony was flying in more than four million new PS2 video game console in the PAL territories straight from the manufacturing plant to meet demand.
The new PS2 video game is mostly identical to the present models, but the internal volume has been reduce by some 75% which make it half the weight and less than half the thickness of the existing console. This has been partly achieved by using an external power supply. It also has a built in Ethernet port which allows gamers to play online. The redesigned console is now on sale at the same price as the current models.
